The successful applicant will be expected to establish a program of research at UCSD that contributes significantly to the national dialogue related to transforming learning and instruction in multilingual and diverse contexts. We seek a scholar who studies formal and/or informal educational settings and whose work can contribute to the development of innovative learning environments that expand opportunities for underserved populations, including bi/multilingual, bi/multicultural, newcomer, and refugee children and youth. We are interested in scholars who consider sociocultural, sociopolitical, and socioeconomic dimensions as they explore relationships between learning, child development, language development, and educational outcomes, and whose work informs improvements in classroom instruction and/or the social and cultural organization of schools. Given San Diego’s proximity to the U.S-Mexico border and position as a refugee entry point for the United States, we seek a scholar who can address educational issues related to the context of immigration, and San Diego’s distinct reality as a multilingual and transnational border region. As our programs seek to transform education in a diverse society, we are looking for a colleague who takes an asset-oriented, student-centered approach, and works to promote social justice for linguistically minoritized and racially diverse students. Within these areas, candidates’ research agendas should attend explicitly to educational equity, have an application to practice, and demonstrate advanced expertise in quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods.
The Department of Education Studies within the Division of Social Sciences at UC San Diego is an interdisciplinary environment focused on transforming education in a diverse society through a close integration of research and practice and commitment to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. The successful candidate will be joining a department in which faculty conduct research on teaching and learning, educational reform and policy across educational settings (PreK-20), youth development, leadership and organizations, early learning, higher education, language learning, bilingual deaf education, urban education, among other topics, as well as engage in the training of teachers, education professionals, and educational researchers. Highly collaborative in research, teaching, and service, the department aims to attract candidates who are interested in working together with faculty within the department, other researchers on the UC San Diego campus, and with practitioners in the community. In addition to having demonstrated the highest standards of scholarship and professional activity, the preferred candidates will have experience or demonstrated contributions to a climate that supports equity, inclusion and diversity.
Responsibilities for this position include maintaining an active program of research; pursuing external funds to support research; teaching undergraduate courses for students pursuing education minors; instructing graduate students in faculty member’s fields of expertise; supervising graduate student research and mentoring undergraduate students; participating in service functions of the department and the University; and supporting the student-centered culture of the department.
Required qualifications include a doctorate in education or a related social science discipline; an established record of research in the field and/or evidence of a strong research trajectory; experience in teaching or assisting in teaching at the higher education level; experience and/or participation in grant writing processes; experience linking research and practice.
Desirable qualifications include PreK-12 teaching experience; experience working in multilingual contexts; fluency in English in addition to one or more languages related to the area of study (including American Sign Language); expertise in using educational technologies to support undergraduate and graduate teaching and learning; experience developing collaborative relationships with PreK-12 educators, schools, and local communities.
Salary: The level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Salary will be based on University of California pay scales.
