The GGSE’s Department of Education seeks to fill a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in the area of Program Evaluation and Quantitative Methods. The Gevirtz Graduate School of Education (GGSE) is a diverse institution in a diverse community in a richly diverse state. The GGSE is part of UC Santa Barbara, one of only 62 members of the Association of American Universities (AAU) and the first AAU member to attain the status of Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). As a public, land grant institution, GGSE at UCSB is deeply committed to centering diversity in our work. In addition to finding faculty who bring scholarly expertise in the areas that are described below, we seek to ensure that successful candidates engage in scholarship, teaching, and service that will help us work with the diverse populations in our region, state, and nation to achieve the goal of educational equity.

While the disciplinary area is open (e.g., economics, leadership, public policy, psychology), we expect candidates’ research to address disparities in education, with a focus on increasing opportunities for traditionally under-represented groups. The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in Education or related fields. The successful candidate’s teaching responsibilities will include teaching and mentoring of M.A. and Ph.D. students, teacher education candidates and undergraduate students in the educational minors. Additionally, the successful candidate will be hired with the expectation of collaborating with other faculty to undertake interdisciplinary research studies and grant-writing opportunities with a strong grounding in theory and applied methodology that can directly impact educational and social policy, programs, and practice.

Qualifications. We seek a colleague who conducts applied program evaluation research with tangible educational policy implications, and whose body of work directly contributes to research in program evaluation. Required qualifications include: (a) substantial research experience in program evaluation and deep knowledge of theory, (b) research expertise in educational disparities and programs that reduce inequities; and (c) evidence of a commitment to collaboration with faculty and students. Additional desired qualifications include: (a) expertise in complementary areas such as specialized applied statistical methodologies (e.g., multilevel modeling), causal inference, experimental design, mixed methods, or measurement, (b) a background in utilizing population, nationally representative, school district, or university-level datasets; and (c) a research agenda that bridges theory to practice to directly impact local, state, or national policy.

Duties and Responsibilities. The successful candidate will advise graduate students and teach courses in program evaluation and applied statistics and preferably education policy in both undergraduate and graduate programs and at both introductory and advanced levels. The candidate will also be expected to work with our current faculty to develop bridges between the department and the UCSB grant-seeking research community to serve as program evaluators. In this way, we expect our candidate to be open to the opportunity to develop a central role in the growth of the Gevirtz School as a hub of program evaluation both on campus and nationally.
