Preference will be given to candidates who have earned a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in reading/literacy education by the time of the appointment. A strong candidate will demonstrate: a commitment to creative and engaging undergraduate teaching and academic advising; a minimum of three years successful teaching experience in 1-6 classrooms; experience working within U.S. schools; the ability to model effective use of reading/literacy standards; a commitment to pursue a program of scholarship that includes publishing in professional journals and presenting at regional, state, and national conferences; and a willingness to serve the college, department, profession, and community. Preferred experiences include: collaborating with school personnel within diverse schools, teaching undergraduate elementary methods courses, and supervising elementary education teacher candidates in field placements.

The qualified individual will teach a sequence of two required, literacy courses for elementary education majors and courses focused on advanced literacy assessment and the diagnosis of reading difficulties which are part of the optional Reading Teacher Endorsement. Other responsibilities commensurate with the individual’s academic background and experiences will likely include some combination of: supervision of reading-specific field experiences, supervision of general elementary pre-student teaching field experiences and student teachers, as well as teaching courses in the First-Year Inquiry sequence and the student teaching Seminar in Classroom Management. Service as an academic advisor to Elementary Education majors will begin in the third year of employment. The teaching and supervisory load for this position may be reduced in the first year to allow for orientation activities and will be 24 credit hours thereafter.
